2. How do I know if my tires need to be replaced?

The most reliable check is tread depth. Tires are legally worn out at 2/32 of an inch, but most tire safety experts recommend replacing them at 4/32 for adequate wet-weather grip. You can use a tread depth gauge or the quarter test: if you insert a quarter head-down into the tread and can see above Washington’s head, your tires are getting low. Sidewall cracking, bubbling, or tires that are more than 6–10 years old are also strong replacement signals regardless of tread depth.
